Towards the end of a teaching stint at Norwich School of Art, forty or so years ago, Lucian Freud set the students an excercise: "I said you'll be dead very soon and I want you to make self-portraits and I want you to put in everything you feel is relevant, to do with your life and how you feel about yourself. And not think that this is perhaps a picture on the way to perhaps doing a better picture. I want you to try and make it the most revealing, telling and believable object. Something really shameless, you know."
